Is It Anxiety… Or Is My Nervous System Asking for Help?

Sometimes what feels like "something is wrong with me" is actually your body trying to protect you.

"I don't know what's wrong with me."

It's one of the most common things I hear.

"I've been so emotional lately."

"I can't seem to switch my brain off."

"I feel exhausted all the time."

"I'm snapping at people I love."

"I just don't feel like myself."

And do you know what?

Sometimes there isn't anything "wrong" with you.

Sometimes your body is simply waving a little flag saying,

"Hey… I could really use some support over here."

Anxiety isn't "just in your head."

One of the biggest misconceptions about anxiety is that it's all about our thoughts.

Our thoughts absolutely matter, but anxiety isn't just a mental experience.

It's physical.

Your heart beats faster.

Your breathing changes.

Your muscles tense.

Your stomach feels unsettled.

Your mouth becomes dry.

You become more alert to what's happening around you.

These aren't random symptoms.

They're your nervous system preparing your body for action.

Your body can't always tell the difference

Imagine you're walking through the bush and suddenly see what looks like a snake.

Your heart races.

Your breathing changes.

Your muscles tighten.

You become hyper-aware.

Then you realise…

It's actually just a stick.

Your body reacted before your brain had all the information.

Now imagine that same response happening because of:

  • a stressful email
  • financial pressure
  • an exam
  • relationship conflict
  • lack of sleep
  • months of chronic stress
  • never slowing down

Your nervous system doesn't only respond to physical danger.

It also responds to experiences it perceives as threatening or overwhelming.

Stress isn't always one big event

We often think stress has to be something huge.

But sometimes it's lots of little things piling up.

  • Poor sleep.
  • Skipping meals.
  • Working too much.
  • Scrolling until midnight.
  • Trying to keep everyone happy.
  • Never saying no.
  • Living on coffee.
  • Forgetting to drink water.
  • Putting yourself last.

Individually they might not seem like much.

Together?

They can leave your nervous system working overtime.

So what does a stressed nervous system actually look like?

It doesn't always look like panic attacks.

Sometimes it looks like:

  • feeling overwhelmed by simple tasks
  • becoming emotional over little things
  • brain fog
  • trouble concentrating
  • procrastination
  • headaches
  • jaw tension
  • tight shoulders
  • digestive changes
  • constantly feeling tired
  • wanting to cancel plans
  • craving sugar or comfort foods
  • feeling "on" all the time

You might recognise one.

You might recognise ten.

Either way, your body is giving you information.

Here's something I wish everyone understood

Your nervous system isn't trying to ruin your day.

It's trying to keep you safe.

Sometimes it just becomes a little… enthusiastic.

Think of it like an overprotective security guard.

Its intentions are good.

Its timing?

Sometimes questionable.

It's the security guard that sees someone carrying a ladder and immediately assumes they're breaking into the building.

Helpful.

But maybe a little dramatic.

Our nervous systems can become like that too, especially after prolonged stress or difficult experiences.

The goal isn't to never feel anxious

Let's get rid of that pressure right now.

Anxiety itself isn't the enemy.

It's a normal human emotion.

We all feel it.

The goal isn't to eliminate anxiety.

The goal is to build enough awareness and support that anxiety doesn't get to drive the bus every single day.

You can still feel anxious…

And make kind decisions.

You can still feel stressed…

And choose to take a slow breath.

You can still feel overwhelmed…

And decide to eat lunch before you've reached the point of surviving on biscuits and caffeine.

Progress isn't about perfection.

It's about giving your body more opportunities to feel safe.

Five simple ways to support yourself today

When life feels loud, start small.

🥗 Eat something nourishing.

Your brain and nervous system need energy to function well. Skipping meals can make it much harder for your body to regulate stress.

🥤Drink a glass of water.

Hydration supports many of the body's normal processes, including concentration, energy, and overall well-being.

🏃‍♀️ Move your body.

You don't need an intense workout.

Go for a walk.

Stretch.

Dance around your kitchen.

Yes, even if your neighbours are watching.

🧘‍♀️ Breathe slowly.

Try breathing in for four seconds and out for four seconds for a few minutes.

Slow breathing can help shift your body towards a calmer state.

🏞️ Get outside.

Fresh air, natural light, and spending time in nature can support your mental wellbeing and help you feel more present.

When should I ask for help?

Sometimes simple nervous system support is enough to help you feel more regulated.

Sometimes it isn't.

If anxiety is affecting your relationships, your work, your sleep, your ability to function day-to-day, or if it feels persistent and overwhelming, it's important to reach out to a trusted health professional.

There is incredible strength in asking for support.

You don't have to carry everything on your own.

Before You Go…

If there's one thing I hope you take away from today's blog, it's this:

Your body isn't trying to work against you.

It's trying to work for you.

Sometimes it just needs a little reassurance that you're safe.

So today…

Take the breath. Drink the water. Eat the lunch. Stretch your shoulders. Go outside for five minutes.

And remember…

Supporting your nervous system isn't about fixing yourself.

It's about caring for yourself.

One small step at a time.
