Why You Can't Heal When You're Running on Empty

Your body can't build a sense of safety if it's constantly trying to survive.

Healing isn't just about positive thinking. Sometimes it's about eating lunch, getting some sleep, and giving your body what it's been asking for all along.

Have you ever noticed

The busier life gets…

The more we stop doing the very things that help us feel better?

We skip breakfast because we're running late.

Lunch becomes a coffee.

Dinner is whatever's quickest.

We stay up too late because it's the only "me time" we get.

We tell ourselves we'll slow down next week.

Then next week becomes next month.

Before we know it, we're exhausted, emotional, overwhelmed and wondering why we don't feel like ourselves anymore.

Sound familiar?

You're definitely not the only one.

We expect a lot from our bodies

Think about everything we ask our bodies to do every single day.

  • Get out of bed.
  • Go to work.
  • Study.
  • Parent.
  • Cook.
  • Clean.
  • Exercise.
  • Remember everyone's birthdays.
  • Reply to messages.
  • Manage stress.
  • Make good decisions.
  • Stay calm.
  • Sleep well.
  • Be productive.
  • Be present.
  • Smile.

And somehow… function perfectly while surviving on three coffees, half a muesli bar and whatever leftovers we found in the fridge.

Honestly…

Our bodies deserve a standing ovation.

Healing needs resources

One of the biggest misconceptions about healing is that it's something we do only with our minds.

While mindset absolutely matters…

Your body also needs the physical resources to support healing.

Think about it this way.

If someone asked you to build a house, but only gave you three bricks and a hammer…

You'd probably struggle.

Your body is no different.

To regulate, recover and repair, it needs things like:

  • nourishing food
  • hydration
  • sleep
  • movement
  • rest
  • connection
  • moments of safety
  • grounding

Without those foundations, your nervous system is constantly working harder than it needs to.

Food is more than fuel

As a chef, this is something I'm incredibly passionate about.

Food isn't just calories.

It's information.

Every meal provides your body with nutrients that support energy production, brain function, hormone production, immune function and countless other processes.

Does one healthy meal magically change your life?

No.

Just like one takeaway meal doesn't ruin it.

It's what we do consistently that matters.

And that's actually really good news.

Because consistency is achievable.

Perfection isn't.

Rest isn't something you earn

This one might make a few people uncomfortable.

Somewhere along the way, many of us learnt that rest has to be deserved.

"I'll rest when everything is done."

"I'll slow down once I finish this project."

"I'll relax next weekend."

The problem?

Life rarely stops asking things of us.

Rest isn't a reward.

It's one of the ways we keep ourselves well enough to keep showing up.

Small habits really do matter

People often think healing has to involve dramatic life changes.

In reality, it's usually much quieter than that.

It's:

  • Eating breakfast.
  • Drinking enough water.
  • Walking outside for ten minutes.
  • Going to bed a little earlier.
  • Putting your phone down while you eat.
  • Taking five slow breaths.
  • Stretching your body.
  • Laughing with someone you love.

None of those things seem particularly exciting.

But together?

They create an environment where your nervous system can begin to soften.

Progress isn't about being perfect

Can I let you in on a little secret?

I still have days where I eat cereal for dinner.

Sometimes life gets busy.

Sometimes I don't drink enough water.

Sometimes I stay up later than I should because I convince myself one more episode is an excellent idea.

We're all human.

Supporting your nervous system isn't about getting everything right.

It's about noticing when you've drifted away from caring for yourself and gently finding your way back.

Without guilt.

Without shame.

Without deciding you've "failed".

Five small things you can do today

If you're feeling like you're running on empty, start here.

🥔🥩 Eat something with protein

Your brain and body need consistent fuel throughout the day

🥤Drink a glass of water

Sometimes the basics really are the best place to begin.

🏞️ Step outside

Fresh air and natural light can help you feel more connected to the present moment.

🧑‍🩰 Stretch your body

Release a little of the tension you've been carrying.

❓Ask yourself one simple question

"What does my body need from me today?"

You might be surprised by the answer.

Before You Go…

If there's one thing I hope you remember today, it's this:

Healing doesn't happen because we push ourselves harder.

It happens because we begin supporting ourselves differently.

Your body isn't asking for perfection.

It's asking for consistency, for you to show up for you.

One nourishing meal.

One early night.

One deep breath.

One walk.

One moment of kindness towards yourself.

Those little moments don't seem like much.

Until one day you realise they changed everything.

If You're Ready for the Next Step…

Understanding your nervous system is a beautiful place to begin, but lasting change comes from gently putting that knowledge into practice.

That's exactly why I created my nervous system resources—to help you move beyond simply knowing what to do, and start creating small daily habits that help your body feel safe, supported, and regulated.

Whether you're looking for a quick reset or a deeper journey through my 30 Day Nervous System Reset, I'd love to support you.
